Paolo: Choice and flexibility
Once you’re a uni student, you will probably hear this a lot. In university you get a lot of choice and flexibility, in regards to your units, majors, and importantly timetables, depending on your course. For example, I am currently studying three units and am at university only three times a week! Unfortunately, I don’t get a four day weekend but I’m satisfied with a two day tutor and lecture break. But as a student, you also need to make choices and be flexible. This semester I made the choice to have a tutorial at 9am then the corresponding lecture at 4pm. That’s a five hour gap! But that was my choice and I have learnt to work around it. It’s all about making the best of the situation. So, in that 5 hour gap I am able to go home, go to the gym, eat lunch, study, and even take a nap if I want to!
How you learn is also something you will need to understand and be flexible about. Do you find it easier going to lectures and taking notes? Or would you rather listen at home to recorded lectures? Maybe you like to do both? Personally, I learn a lot from lectures and taking notes, while reading textbooks for unknown terms.
The most important lesson you’ll learn in university is that your education is your responsibility. I hope that doesn’t scare you, instead take it as a challenge to make the most of your time as a uni student!
