Nastashia: First mentoring session for the year

No comments :

Although I had no classes today, I came to uni for my first mentoring session with my mentees. The first thing I noticed was the amount of people at uni, the new buildings and all of the construction that was going on. It was very happening!

At our mentoring session, we took our mentees to the Welcome BBQ event organised by BCSS, MASA and FMAA, as we thought it would be a good chance to introduce them to some of the great commerce clubs we have at uni. During the mentoring session it was great to hear that our mentees are fitting in well, making new friends and getting involved in various activities. At the same time, there were also a variety of questions that popped up during our conversation, such as car parking issues, second-hand books, class locations and workshops for assignments. One of most important things we discussed, though, was time management.

Sometimes university can be quite overwhelming with tests, assignments and readings. On top of that, you still have to balance work, extra curriculum and social life, which sounds like a total nightmare! In addressing this issue, one of our mentors gave a really good tip and I could not agree with it more. She suggested downloading the unit guide, reading through it and jotting down all the assignments, tests and exam dates in your diary so that you can plan ahead and be well prepared, instead of rushing all of them at the very last minute. A good preparation is key in doing well at uni and people who I know of that planned ahead are really excelling in their course.

All in all, the first mentoring session went well and I’m looking forward to our next session, as we are going to have some fun with MSA Week activities!
